Why Being Attached to the Outcome will Make you Fail

Reading time: minute(s)

As you build a home-based business or grow your network marketing team, your eye is on the goal. You are focused on what you want to accomplish. Unfortunately, this approach can actually hurt your business if you aren’t careful.

To be successful, you need to know what you are striving for, but being too attached to an outcome will actually make you fail.

What I mean is that it’s possible to aim so high that you miss the mark. When you are attached to the desired outcome, you miss opportunities and can actually drag yourself down, inhibiting your efforts.

It will Drain your Energy

When you are attached to the outcome of a business opportunity, or your professional efforts in general, you will lose energy. You will be so wrapped up in trying to make something happen exactly how you envision it that you will drain yourself of energy, passion and excitement.

As you become drained of energy, your entire business will suffer. You will find that you won’t be able to do things like market your business, network with other professionals, reach out to potential customers and manage all the administrative tasks that come with owning a business.

You’re too Focused on Yourself

Another side effect that comes with being attached to the outcome is that you will become too focused on yourself. Tunnel vision will take over and you will neglect those around you. This means people like your coworkers, customers and even family will lack the attention they deserve.

I’m a firm believer in the idea that the more you give the more you get. Focusing on others instead of yourself will only bring you up, and will benefit your business in the long run.

You Lack the Success Mentality

One of the biggest success secrets I have learned over the years is that having a success mentality makes all the difference. When you believe in yourself and that your business will succeed, you are more likely to make it happen. You will pursue opportunities with more ambition and give your business the time and dedication it requires to increase your income.

However, if you become too attached to the outcome, you will lose this mentality. You will think more about achieving some specific outcome than maintaining a mentality that will help you reach success, whatever that make look like.

How Not to be Attached

When I first started my network marketing business, I found myself getting attached to the outcome quite easily. Here’s one example. I was working with a new team member to launch her business. Our business model is known for the concept of leverage so we were working closely together to help reach her goals. Well, it sure didn’t work out the way I thought it would!  It turned out she was not coachable and sabotaged her own action plan by not following the proven system. I really worked hard to help her and then took it personally when she did not get success. This zapped my energy and set me back for a day or two.

The point here is that we have no control over what people will do or not do. We can only hope that new recruits will be coachable and follow the system, but it’s not guaranteed. In any sales and marketing business, the key is to detach from the outcome and move on quickly. The word here is ‘next’!

Keep this in mind when making sales calls especially when someone on the other end of the line decides to rain on your parade. Don’t take it personally. There are a ton of eager people out there looking for what you have to offer!

How to Live in Abundance

Living in abundance means living a full life. It means doing what you love, whether that means spending more time with your family, traveling, starting a business that gives back or developing new hobbies. This is one of the best perks that comes with running your own business, and it’s one that often makes everything that comes with this pursuit worthwhile.

When you are too attached to the outcome, you limit your ability to live an abundant life. You will be distracted by everyday tasks, pushing your business ahead and making more money. Of course, these things are important and in most cases, make it possible for you to live an abundant life, a life of ultimate freedom of time and money.

But, learn to enjoy the journey and stop focusing so much on the outcome so you don’t miss out. Learning to do this will ensure you reap the full benefits of being in business for yourself and help you be more successful, since you will have time to renew your energy and passion.

If you are too attached to the outcome, and are limiting your ability to reach full success and the lifestyle you want, it’s not too late to change things. Contact me to learn how you can run a successful business while still living a full life.
