Get Good At Overcoming Objections

Reading time: minute(s)

I have found as I coach and mentor entrepreneurs, the one thing that holds them back from truly building a successful business is getting good at overcoming objections.

At a virtual business training on the weekend, I was reminded of this and how it stops people in their tracks.  It makes them quit before they even get started!  Or, they get going and then quickly put on the brakes.  Or, they build for awhile and then get stuck.

If you want to have the freedom and income of being an entrepreneur, let’s not sugar coat it… it is hard to start and build a business, but it is worth it, when done right.

So, let’s delve into the 5 main objections that everyone faces at one time or another.

Time

This is the biggest one and the answer is not, “you can make time”.  If someone has 3 jobs and 5 kids at home, they will run the other way with that comment.  Be open and really listen.  Say “tell me more about why you don’t have time”.  Dig deeper and be resourceful.  You’ll be amazed at how you can help them with their problem.

Money

Many people don’t have the money to start a business, or don’t give themselves permission to invest in something they really want.  They might say, “I can’t afford it and what if it doesn’t work out”.  Dig deeper, be empathetic to their concerns and limiting beliefs.  Then become resourceful with them on how to find the money.  My mentor Bari Baumgardner came up with 50 ways to pay for the next big stretch!

Spouse (partner or family member)

First, give yourself permission and then get really honest with your spouse.  “Hey John, I know, I know, this never seemed to work in the past… but this is really important to me and I need your full support.  I need to invest in this training program so I can stop the self doubt and stop re-inventing the wheel.  If you will support me, I promise to pay it back with interest… (and mean it) or… reward us with a family vacation…etc., etc.).

Fear

Are you meant for more?  Are they meant for more?  They don’t believe in themselves and we have to remind them that it’s about progress, not perfection.  As you dig deeper with empathy, also reassure them, they are worthy of success and that you will support and coach them along the way.  You’re never alone in this business model of direct sales, it’s a team sport.  Ask, “what is the worst that can happen if they do the work?”

Shame & Self-Doubt

We seem to forget that we were once a child learning how to walk – falling down and getting up a zillion times.  Remember, there is no shame in not getting it right every time.  To help them with self-doubt, listen again, and ask, “tell me more… about that….”.

If you get good at overcoming these 5 main objections, your business will flourish.  You have to re-enroll yourself and your team.  Say to yourself and them, “we can do this!”  Mantras and high fives really do work!

In my training programs, I cover this topic in greater detail and you’ll even fall in love with objections!  I promise you will stop your limiting beliefs and enjoy the journey of being an entrepreneur.
