When we talk about an entrepreneur, do we really understand what it takes to be one? So I got thinking about the people I know who are entrepreneurs, including myself, and what makes them tick.
The way I see it, the #1 mindset hack for entrepreneurs is courage.
Many times, you are taking a big risk but it is a risk that motivates you and will make you grow as a person. You may not win every time or be successful right away, but entrepreneurs are driven and will always get ‘back up on that horse after they have fallen off.’
I learned early on about being an entrepreneur from my parents who ran a fairly large farming operation. In those days it was so risky, stressful and hard work because we didn’t have the equipment and manpower that they have today. But I never regretted that life because in the end, I saw that being an entrepreneur was so rewarding.
It led me to being a franchise owner, real estate investor, and business consultant. Once I had the bug of being an entrepreneur there was no looking back, even though it took a ton of courage and belief in myself along with unwavering consistent action.
So what makes up the entrepreneurial mindset?
Well, first of all, I believe you have to be open, creative, looking for an opportunity, prepared to take risks and willing to take action. This takes courage!
“Entrepreneurs are ready to step into something they know very little about.”
This means you have a vision, you see the bigger picture, and are totally committed to achieving the end result. You are like ‘a dog with a bone’, never letting go, and never letting anyone destroy your dream. You have a belief system and passion for what you are going to do and can harness that passion in the right way.
“Entrepreneurs have a mindset that sees the possibilities rather than the problems created by change.” – J. Gregory Dees
You understand that your undertaking is a work in progress that will require you to develop new skills, gain more knowledge and find additional resources along the way. You know you can’t do everything yourself and you will have to find the support you need. Rome was not built in a day.
Courage as a the #1 mindset hack for entrepreneurs also means that you are resilient.
You can deal with setbacks and problems that arise in your journey, because there will be many. You will make mistakes, but you will learn from them and make the changes necessary to progress.
“I haven’t failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas Edison
So there you go. The entrepreneurs I know have demonstrated this kind of mindset. And that is why they are successful.
