The Shift Towards Social Entrepreneurship

Reading time: minute(s)

Quietly but steadily, there is a growing shift towards social entrepreneurship.

Today, new, developing and existing companies are implementing a social cause in their business model.

“Social entrepreneurship is the use of startup companies and other entrepreneurs to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues.” – Wikipedia

The beginnings of social entrepreneurship can be traced back to the 19th century. The concept was first used as a means to address social problems of the time or bring positive change to society.

So it should not be surprising that it is gaining renewed attention. We seem to have so many more social issues today like pollution, homelessness, addiction, sickness and malnutrition.

Money or profit is no longer the driving factor for business.

Why should it be when everyday we read, see, and hear about terrible social issues?

Millennials are concerned with our environment. They list 10 major social issues that include climate change, poverty, availability of food and water, and lack of education.

“Young people today want to see change. They want a better world.” – Sir Richard Branson

Millennials are also very conscientious about what they buy and who they buy from. They are looking to companies that have a social cause as part of their business model for purchases as well as for employment.

Just look at TOM Shoes, Warby Parker, Evolvhealth and many others on how they give directly back to people in need through their business model. It is immediate, it’s not waiting until after expenses and profits are addressed, it’s about now!

This is what social entrepreneurship is all about!

“If you are not making a difference in other people’s lives, you should not be in business – it’s that simple.” – Sir Richard Branson

It’s not about giving money to Cancer Research or other charitable organizations where you have no idea of how your money is used.

Rather, it’s about knowing that you are making an immediate impact on people’s lives.

In my social business, we are a team of people within a community who are passionate about making a sustainable impact.

To date, we have fed over 16 million children. And to those who will continue to be fed as a result of our success, the impact is profound.

But the impact on us is profound, too. We are filled with purpose, and a sense of gratitude to do something we love while helping those in need.

So get onboard in making a social impact. Let’s do well by doing good.

This shift towards social entrepreneurship is the future of business.
