How Coachable Are You?

Reading time: minute(s)

Recently, I was working with one of my new team members on how to do our business.  Basically, I was helping the person by explaining the process and coaching on what to do.

But interestingly, all I got was pushback. It was puzzling to me why someone who made the decision to work with me and to improve their lifestyle, would not be that coachable.

The person had a better way or idea on how to do everything and my coaching was falling on deaf ears.

Have you ever been in this type of situation?

I know, early on in my business, I had done this myself which was really my ego getting in the way!

Yes, I had to be reminded to follow their advice. It’s so easy to think that we can do it without them, but their success is what we need to learn from.

Let me ask a basic question – Do you consider yourself coachable?  Or for that matter, mentorable?

Many of us think we are.

So it made me wonder as to what do you need to do to be really coachable?

First, you have to be willing to make the decision that you need to be coached or mentored.

Really, what’s even the point of having a coach or a mentor if you are not going to heed their advice and suggestions?

For example you are new to the business and you may need someone to provide that guidance and direction to get you started in the right way.

Can you do it yourself? Perhaps. But a coach would certainly help you navigate through the trial and error mistakes that have already been made by many others.

Next you have to be humble.

Yes – attitude.  You need to recognize and identify what you are lacking, what you want to attain through coaching or mentoring.

Is it the process to follow, the techniques to be applied, or the tools to be used? Or all of the above? Or something else.

Then, you have to be willing to do  your research.

You need to find a coach or mentor that brings what you need to the table, that is to say, a fit for you.

This is key as you do have to find a coach or mentor with the right qualifications and who is willing to help you.

Any Suzie, Tom, Dick or Harry may be a coach or a mentor of something but may not address what you specifically need, or help you get the results you want.

Finally you have to ask.

Ask for help. It is one of the hardest things to do, but without this action, you will never have a coach or a mentor.

Once you have done all of  these, then I would say you are coachable.
