Are Your Limiting Beliefs Holding You Back?

Reading time: minute(s)

Do you have limiting beliefs?  Well, it’s kind of a rhetorical question.  We all have limiting beliefs whether we recognize them or admit it.

So what is a limiting belief anyway? Limiting beliefs are ’those which constrain us in some way.’  They keep us from growing and being more – they are a barrier because they inhibit our thinking and our actions.

They are excuses!

I know this too well as I’ve had many over the years, especially when I started in the network marketing profession – I totally felt I couldn’t do it and that it was beneath me, but once I started studying the business model and getting out of my comfort zone, I began to build a very profitable business in a short period of time.

Another time was when I had already built a real estate investing portfolio of 3 properties and thought that was a good thing, but then attended a real estate investing course and heard from other people and their success and realized I had more potential, so I set my goal for 10 properties in 5 years, and actually achieved it.

It’s wasn’t easy to admit, but I held myself back from reaching my goals and dreams, until I said this is enough! We all have so much potential, but if we don’t address the limiting beliefs, it will slow down our progress and we will absolutely miss out on really living a life of significance and passion.

“The only limits you have are the limits you believe.”- Wayne Dyer

Limiting beliefs are often about ourselves. For example, ‘I am not worthy, I am not smart enough, I am not capable, I am not beautiful and so on’.  You get the message. So these beliefs hold us back from progressing.

Limiting beliefs can also be about other people and the world in general.

For example:

He is a successful leader and I am not, no one makes any money in network marketing, airplane travel is dangerous, you have to go to a hospital to have a baby, or dogs cannot be trusted.

Many times they originate in our minds from long established principles of our society and culture.  They can be false beliefs based on faulty logic, fear, and opinions of others.

They give us excuses as to why we don’t do something or be more than what we are.  They give us an easy way out.

They also allow us to fit in, be accepted, and not fight the system.

They destroy our dreams and aspirations.  They ensure that we fail in life and business.

So how do we get these limiting beliefs?

Well there are many ways – from our parents, our peers, our education system, our job, our government, the news, etc.

They become ingrained in us. They doom us.

So what do we do?  How do we deal with our limiting beliefs?

Well, first of all you have to identify your limiting beliefs.  Are they true or false?

This is not easy as it is about taking a personal inventory of your belief system. But if you want to change and grow, it needs to be done.

Then rate them as to which ones are holding you back, from top to bottom.

Then make a decision to defy and overcome them.

It is not easy to defy what has been ingrained in you.  It takes courage. Get help if you need to.

There is a myriad of information out there from many of the personal development gurus, like Tony Robbins, Bob Proctor and many others on how to overcome them.

But know this – you will never be more than what you are today, unless you identify and overcome those limiting beliefs about yourself, your environment and others.

Remember the immortal words of Napoleon Hill, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

The only things limiting us in life, are then the limits we impose on ourselves.

So start every day, by believing in yourself and that you are indeed, limitless.

You will be glad you did!
