The Best Way to Make a Huge Impact

One of the things I have always wanted to do in life was to somehow make a significant impact, a way to help others in need.

Sure it is wonderful to have personal success, an amazing career, and a collection of materialistic things, but what is more important, is what we do for others.

Especially those in need.

That is why I have always believed in giving of myself to help others.

When I lost my second child at birth, I wanted to help others who had experienced the same trauma.  So I joined a bereavement group, became a facilitator and helped many women and men deal with their loss.

That’s just one example.

So to me, helping others is part of our DNA.  We as a social group cannot survive by ourselves. We need to work with and help each other.

Today many of us contribute to charities and organizations to help them address a specific issue (like cancer, diabetes, world hunger, etc.) or many issues (such as the United Way).

We are constantly being approached to give. And we feel guilty when we don’t.

But do we really know if we are making an impact? We think we are doing the right thing, but do we know where our money is going?

There is a new way of giving out there now.

It’s through social business.

Businesses that incorporate this concept are making a huge impact on the world.

So, what is social business?

Well, in simple terms, the business is helping to address a social issue through a one for one business model.

What does that mean?

A couple of examples: TOM Shoes –  you buy a pair of TOM Shoes and a pair of shoes goes to someone in need.  Buy WARBY PARKER eyeglasses and a pair of glasses goes to someone in need.

Another example: Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Muhammed Yunus improved the lives of millions of poor people in Bangladesh through social business.

Are Governments doing this?  Are NGOs doing this?

No, only specific businesses.

So that is why I am in social business, today.

My team and I help feed malnourished children because childhood malnutrition is the biggest cause of childhood poor development and death worldwide.

But, malnutrition is also growing in every country in the world in another way.

So at the same time, I am helping others with their poor eating because in western society we may not starve, but we are certainly not getting good nutrition because we’re eating the wrong foods. This situation is causing a global epidemic in obesity, diabetes and chronic inflammation (the silent killer) and has become a burdensome cost to society.

There is also a shift in the way people buy.  They want to purchase products from companies who donate through a 1-1 giving model (the front end donations) instead of donations after profits and expenses are disbursed.

This idea of conscious consumerism is growing in leaps and bounds.

So how can you make the biggest impact?
