What Dogs Can Teach You About Your Business

This last month, I spent 10 days at my daughter and son-in-law’s place in upstate New York.  They were away, and my husband and I were helping out by taking care of their place which included attending to their two dogs, their chickens and their garden.

We had brought our dog along with us, and the three were enjoying the time to interact and play.  With 10 acres of land, there was lots of room to let off steam, and they certainly did.

They really taught me so much and it can be applied to our business as well.

By understanding your dogs, you can get the most enjoyment out of them.

In your marketing business, understanding your individual team members, their why, their strong points and their weak points, is important to being a successful team. Being able to utilize your team the best possible way, can only happen if you understand and know each team member.

So let me tell you what these three dogs have taught me about working with my marketing team.

1.  Be patient.

So Guinness is an 80+ pound Bernese/Rottweiler mix who has so much patience.  He outweighs the other two dogs by 2-3 fold.  He lets the other two smaller dogs do anything they want to him.  He just sits back and takes it.  When it is treat time, he just sits and waits.  He has so much patience with everyone.

Well in the network marketing business we tend to expect things to happen very fast.  We expect people to join us immediately and start growing their business.  Well we know it does not work that way so we need to have patience just like Guinness.

2. Be an instigator.

Now Paisley, is an energetic girl who is always starting something.  Whether it getting the other dogs to chase her, bringing out her toys, sounding the alarm, or investigating smells, she is always up to something.  She never rests and doesn’t let the other dogs rest either.  If there has ever been a ‘dog with a bone’, Paisley is it.

“A dog can’t think that much about what he’s doing, he just does what feels right.” – Barbara Kingsolver, Author

In the same way, you have to be a dog with a bone in your network marketing business.  You can never sit still.  You always have to be inspiring your team members to do different things.  You have to be creative.  You have to get the others up and running, every day.  And yes you want them to chase you, to catch you and even surpass you if they can.  But it is certainly going toe a run for their money.

So you have to be an instigator, to create movement.  You don’t want your team to be couch potatoes, do you?

3. Be bold.

Now Bruce is the smallest of the 3 amigos, but don’t let that small size fool you.  He is certainly the alpha dog and controls the other three.  He is fearless and goes after all of them.  There is no question – he is bold, brave and fearless.

“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” – Mark Twain, Author

With your team members, you do have to be both bold and fearless.  This will not only instill confidence in themselves and their business but also within you.  Furthermore, they want a leader who is bold and fearless, to lead them, and to help them succeed.

In a way you are setting the example of what they should be.

Over the 10 days and the ‘three dog nights’, watching these dogs, each with a different personality, has taught me so much about what is important in my business and how I should be.  It has also taught me what I want in my team members as well as what to look for in new prospects.

So be patient, be a ‘dog with a bone’ and be bold and fearless in everything you do.

You will be glad you did, and the ‘treats’ you receive, will be so rewarding!
